What are the main drivers for businesses to use less paper?

Tuesday 28 December 2010 10:39

A recent survey carried out by AIIM reports that 39% of organisations are now using less paper. The percentage is set to quickly rise as document scanning and data capture solutions are becoming more widely acclaimed.

As well as saving on space and resources, the main drivers for converting paper into electronic format are improved access and retrieval rates and information sharing. Nearly 40% of companies also saw a return on investment within twelve months.

A more significant finding, however, was the shift from simply scanning archived material for storage purposes to scanning as part of the business process. Data is being captured upon entry into an organisation and fed directly into systems allowing processing to begin almost immediately. Electronic workflow is also used to direct documentation around a company and ensures that actions are taken within a predefined timescale.
